7 Awesome Tips for Hosting a Successful Super Bowl Party on a Budget (2024)

Are you looking for tips on hosting a successful Super Bowl party on a budget? Then look no further ~ I’ve got ya.

I’m 100% about entertaining on a budget. Especially a Super Bowl party.

After all, a Super Bowl watch party is ALL about watching the game (or commercials, or the half-time show, lol!). It’s not a lavish or elegant affair.

So why spend an exorbitant amount of money on hosting a Super Bowl party? It just doesn’t make any sense.

Your goals are for your friends and family to enjoy themselves, to have fun watching the game, and to host a successful budget-friendly Super Bowl watch party.

Use the following tips to ensure you have a successful party…

7 Awesome Tips for Hosting a Super Bowl Watch Party on a Budget

Tip #1: Prep for your Super Bowl watch party ahead of time

Preparation is key for any successful party. Especially if you are on a budget.

You must have everything prepared ahead of time! Plus prepping for your Super Bowl watch party will lessen your stress and increase your enjoyment of throwing the party.

To ensure you have everything prepared in advance; make sure you have completed all of the listed items below a few days (2-3) before your party begins.

Tip #2: Ensure you will have enough seating for your guests to watch the game

A successful Super Bowl party is all about watching the game. So you MUST make sure you have enough seats for every guest ~ whether they choose to watch the game, or hang out in the kitchen.

It’s imperative that you have a headcount at least 3 days before your party. That way you have time to gather any additional seating you might need.

We create a tiered viewing area for our guests. The first level sits on the floor; on the carpet or floor cushions. The second level tier sits on couches and chairs. And the third level has stools to sit on.

This provides our friends and family with easy viewing (no heads in the way). Unless your guests have fun yelling “down in front” at each other (lol!).

To keep within your budget, figure out how many more seats you need and ask a few guests to bring folding chairs or large floor cushions. I’m sure they will be very willing to contribute, and it won’t cost you a dime.

Tip #3: Provide props for your guests to use while watching the Super Bowl

Increase the enjoyment of watching the Super Bowl with fun props. Think of inexpensive hand clappers or diy pom poms that your guests can use when they are cheering for their team.

A super budget-friendly option is to whip up a set of my referee napkin penalty flags. They’re crazy cheap and easy to make. Your guests will have a blast with them because they can “throw” a flag on the field when they aren’t happy with a call.

Props will really enhance the fun and participation at your Super Bowl watch party and make it a success.

Tip #4: Set up a drink station

Beverages are a must for a Super Bowl party. Especially beer. So grab (or borrow) a few coolers or drink buckets and set up a drink station. That way everyone knows where to go when they need a cold one.

Don’t forget to have a section for water and non-alcoholic drinks. Fill a dispenser with water, or margarita mix, and have a bucket of ice next to it. Then add a stack of cups with markers so your guests can identify their beverage.

To keep your Super Bowl watch party budget-friendly, make it a BYOB party. Guests are always happy (and sometimes prefer) to bring a 6-pack to share. That way they know there will be something they want to drink.

Tip #5: Decorate your Super Bowl viewing room and food station

Have fun decorating your viewing room and food/drink stations for the Super Bowl party. You can either use the colors of the team(s) that are playing or focus on football-themed decorations.Dollar Tree is a great place to pick up budget-friendly disposable plates, napkins, and utensils.

I set up a buffet table for my Super Bowl party using super easy and cheap (budget-friendly) diy projects. The football field table runner is so obviously football-themed and then adding the football diy goalposts just solidifies the decor. You almost don’t need anything else. Bonus – they cost less than $10 to make ~ total!

Then to really embrace the Super Bowl theme party, we encourage our friends and family to wear the colors of the team they’re supporting. That’s easy if your local team is playing! It’s also a guaranteed conversation started for those guests that don’t know each other.

Tip #6: Make it a buffet and provide Super Bowl focused foods

One of the best things about throwing a Super Bowl watch party is the food. You can’t go wrong with it. Food at watch parties must be easy to eat and mostly finger foods.

Plus it’s the ideal party to have a buffet table. Just create a rough outline menu and put it out there for your friends and family to pick a dish to bring and share.

Your guest will be focused on the game. They don’t want to be cutting up their food or trying to manage what they’re eating and watching at the same time.

Consider providing a wide variety of snacks and hearty appetizers. Chips and dip are obvious, but also consider fruit and veggie trays, popcorn or Chex mix, and pretzels and nuts.

Simple finger foods like taquitos, jalapeno poppers, and chicken wings are great options. And of course, your standard stadium fare: pizza, hamburgers and hot dogs are perfect go-to foods.

Consider making cookies or brownies in the shape of footballs. They are fun desserts that your guests can easily grab and take back to their seats. Plus, they embrace the football party theme.

Throwing a successful Super Bowl party on a budget isn’t the time to try a new-fangled recipe. Stick to the tried and true dishes.

Tip #7: Have other entertainment available during your Super Bowl watch party

There will be times during (or after) the Super Bowl game that some of your guests might need to let off a little steam, take a break, or celebrate.

So provide them with other entertainment options.

If it’s nice outside; set up cornhole, bocce ball, or Spike Ball game. These are fun and easy games to have available that your guests can easily pick up and put down. Plus they’re fun before, during halftime, or after the game activities.

If the weather isn’t conducive to being outside, provide penalty flags that your guest can throw during the game when they aren’t happy with a call. They are SUPER cheap to make, and your guests will have fun using them.

Or create a Super Bowl bingo, a Super Bowl trivia game, or Super Bowl squares game. There are lots of references online that you can download for free, and then all you need is paper. Definitely a budget-friendly Super Bowl party idea.

I hope these tips help you host a successful budget-friendly Super Bowl party. Enjoy the game!
