These Patriotic Sprinkle Cookies are incredibly soft and look amazing for the 4th of July! It’s basically my favorite chewy sugar cookie recipe but with red, white, and blue sprinkles. This an easy butter cookie recipe with no chill time – just mix and bake!

Patriotic Sprinkle Cookies

This easy sprinkle cookie recipe has an explosion of patriotic colors! I’m just absolutely in love with these red, white, and blue sprinkle-covered treats. You won’t stop grinning down at these easy sprinkle cookies after you bake them. They’re so darn cute!

Speaking of fireworks, everyone always raves about these iconic Fourth of July desserts: Fireworks Sugar Bars, Fireworks Sugar Cookie Cake, and Fireworks Pudding Cookies.

Anyway, you’ll be so surprised at how soft these sprinkled cookies turn out. Just one bite of this soft sugar cookie and you won’t be able to resist its sweet, sugary goodness!

2 Soft Cookie Secrets

  1. Use one egg and one egg yolk. The extra egg yolk gives a little bit more chew to the cookie.
  2. Cream of Tartar works with baking soda to create a soft and chewy cookie.

Ingredients Needed

  • Butter: use unsalted butter that’s been softened.
  • Sugar: Granulated sugar is the best sugar to use for sugar cookies
  • Egg yolk plus an egg: this is the trick to getting a really chewy cookie
  • Cream of tartar: many people don’t know what this is so I recommend learning about what is cream of tartar: uses and substitutions
  • Sprinkles: I’m using patriotic colors for the Fourth of July but use any colors for any occasion

How to make Sprinkle Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper or Silpat baking mats.
  2. Cream butter and sugar with a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or you may use a hand mixer).
  3. Mix in the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla until smooth, then mix in your dry ingredients: baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Slowly mix in flour until the cookie dough comes together, then stir in the sprinkles.
  4. Scoop cookie dough balls and place dough balls 2” apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  5. Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until the bottoms just start to turn golden brown.
  6. Cool for at least 5 minutes on the cookie sheet before removing.
  7. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.

Expert Tips

  • You can easily double this recipe by just multiplying all ingredients by two.
  • These sprinkle sugar cookies taste better if you bake them slightly under rather than overdone. The underbaked sugar cookie texture is SO delicious.
  • I recommend using a recognized brand for your sprinkles rather than cheap dollar-store ones since those would dissolve in your batter.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup (170g) unsalted butter softened
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups (248g) all purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups sprinkles any color for any holiday or use rainbow

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper or silpat baking mats.

  • Cream butter and sugar with a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or you may use a hand mixer). Once the mixture is creamed and fluffy, mix in the egg, egg yolk and vanilla until smooth, then mix in the baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Slowly mix in flour until the mixture is just combined, then stir in the sprinkles.

  • Scoop balls of cookie dough 2 Tablespoons each, andplace them 2” apart on the prepared cookie sheets. Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until the bottoms just start to turn golden brown. (These taste better if you err on the side of under rather than over done). Cool at least 5 minutes on cookie sheet before removing.

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.

  • I like to err on the side of under done for these – you know sprinkle cookies are done baking when they’ve just lost their glossy sheen.
  • Any color sprinkles work!
